American Horror Story is a very uniquely awesome series. It has the benefit of being both a serialized and anthological story all at the same time. Each season is one long, self-contained story, and as such, you can pretty much go into each season cold and enjoy it on its own merits. Perhaps the biggest plus to this whole thing, however, is the fact that each season uses a unique theme — usually a twist or exploitation of a common horror trope.
Last season was an especially unique in that the theme wasn’t revealed to be Roanoke until it aired its first episode. Given the secrecy surrounding that season, we half expected that this season would very much play out the same, with the theme being held out until the very last possible second. After all, the show wouldn’t even be returning until this fall season, so there would be no point in rushing the whole deal, right?
You can imagine our surprise when American Horror Story showrunner Ryan Murphy went on to Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, and when asked what the next season’s theme would be, he answered outright.
“Well, I don’t have a title, but the season that we begin shooting in June is going to be about the election that we just went through. So I think that will be interesting for a lot of people.â€
So rather than deal with a typical horror trope as they have in previous seasons, it looks like they’ll be looking to straight-up pull out some horror from real life. Whether or not you agree that it felt like something out of a horror movie, there is no denying that at the very least this election seemed like something out of a parody, no matter what end of the political spectrum you fall on.
When Murphy dropped the news regarding the season, he was inevitably asked if Donald Trump would be present, and Murphy only responded with a “maybe.â€
This brings a boatload of questions to mind. While a lot of what the filmmakers bring to the table is based on real life horror incidents, none of been wholly based on recent events. Furthermore, we have to wonder if they plan on playing the concept as a straight political-type season withthe high points heightened for effect, or if they plan on incorporating some sort of deadly massacre into the whole deal. Surely, the events can’t play out exactly like they did in real life, right? Or perhaps they’ll raise the veil on some horrific behind-the-scenes action that ended in Trump’s victory.
Seems like an interesting premise nonetheless. Any political quibbles aside, what do you think of this concept for the next season of American Horror Story? Let us know your thoughts down below!
