Since 2003’s “Wrong Turn†with Eliza Dushku and Emmanuelle Chriqui, the “Wrong Turn†series has become a cult favorite for its die hard fans.
“Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines†marked its fifth entry into the franchise with a certain twist—the favorite hillbilly cannibals are not stalking for victims in the mountain forests this time, but in a small town.
The backdrop of the movie has a small West Virginia town hosting the Mountain Man Festival on Halloween (think Lollapalooza meets Burning Man Festival).
One of the members of the cannibal family was arrested and jailed in town, and then it was up to the three brothers to rescue their family. However, the local sheriff and a few out-of-town visitors defend themselves from this oncoming attack.
“Wrong Turn†cultists will be pleased that their favorite cannibals of Three Finger, Saw Tooth and One Eye make appearances in this prequel that is set before the original “Wrong Turn†movie. And not in disappointment to the fans, there were plenty of gut-wrenching sick murders throughout the film. The most creative slaughter this time is involved with a huge riding tractor on a soccer field.
The big name cast members for this direct-to-DVD film will be Roxanne McKee (“Game of Thrones†TV show) and Doug Bradley (“Hellraiser†seriesâ€). The rest of the cast included Simon Ginty, Paul Luebke, Oliver Hoare, Amy Lennox and Camilla Arfwedson.
Director Declan O’Brien helmed the project after directing 2011’s “Wrong Turn 4,†which served as the prequel to this film.
Overall, like the rest of the “Wrong Turn†series, the movie is very forgettable just like the other sequels in this franchise. It’s not very funny or scary.
The grisly murders were not all too creative and they were more like the “I’ve seen it before†in other horror movies. We’ve seen enough stabbings, chopping and other torture in our lifetimes—it’s time to be really different.
The biggest flaw for the film is the movie’s plot setting, which made absolutely no sense. With an entire town for a festival, it appeared only a few townsfolk and visitors really mattered against these cannibals. And most of the killings occur around the sheriff’s office and a general store across the street—as if the town is only comprised of two whole buildings. Throughout this slaughter, the rest of the townsfolk are gathered far outside of the city limits enjoying themselves.
So if you’re a fan of “Wrong Turn†series, then it is enjoyable like the rest of the series. For the rest of us, hopefully this is the end of the road for this series.
“Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines†will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray tomorrow on October 23rd.
