Variety has reported actor Michael Pena to star as the famous Latino civil rights activist and union organizer Cesar E. Chavez.
The indie drama has already established a good cast, including America Ferrera (“Ugly Betty”) as the wife Helen Chavez and Rosario Dawson (“Sin City”) as Chavez’s trusted aide Dolores Huerta.
The biopic will chronicle the story of Chavez leading the largest non-violent protest for farm workers’ rights.
Actor Diego Luna will direct the project from a script written by Keir Pearson. It will be Luna’s second film in his directing repertoire.
“This man inspired an entire community to see themselves as deserving of basic rights and to rise up against injustice,” said Luna to Variety. “The film will send the message that change is in our hands – Chavez did something everyone thought impossible with a fearless grace that magnetized an entire country.”
The Mexican-American Michael Pena appeared in a few movies last year including “Tower Heist,” “30: Minutes or Less,” “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Battle: Los Angeles.” He will be seen in the upcoming crime drama “The Gangster Squad.”
“Chavez” will begin production in Sonora, Mexico in April.
