William Fichtner On ‘Ninja Turtles’: Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady, Freaky Mutants, & More

WilliamFichtnerActor William Fichtner has been out making the rounds promoting his new film, “Crossing Lines.” Along the way he has, of course, been asked about his work in the next “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film. In interviews with Hollywood News and Flicks And The City, he’s dropped a few tidbits on the upcoming reboot directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of The Titans).

On Eric Sachs, aka “The Shredder,” and how the character actually seemed to evolve during the shoot, Fichtner says,

“What I read about Eric Sachs in the script was great, and then how the character has been moulded and changed when we started filming has become something really quite remarkable in terms of what we’ve seen before of the character. “I can’t give away too much in the story, but I can tell you that who Shredder is in the telling of this ‘Turtles’ is unlike any other telling of the story before. His connection, and relationship, to the turtles is a bit surprising. The backstory is really intriguing. We made some changes while shooting the film that I thought were awesome.” In closing, about this surprise, he adds, “It isn’t by chance that he knows the turtles. I can’t tell you anymore! I’m in trouble right now!”

On the design and appearance of the Turtles, who will be played by motion-captured actors in a live-action setting ala “Guardians of The Galaxy,” he used the following adjectives:

“It’s freaky. They’re cool”

And also added:

“They are some messed up mutant turtles!”

When asked about the famous duo of Bebop and Rocksteady, Shredder’s dim-witted henchmen, Fichtner revealed that longtime ‘Turtles’ fans will have to continue to wait for those characters to show up in a film adaptation. They will not be in this movie.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is set for an August 8th premiere, and is produced by Michael Bay.

Is anyone else expecting a Darth Vader “I am your father”-style swerve here? And does the fact that the character was seemingly rewritten mid-production set off any alarms for you?
