Jan De BontYou may recall that a few years back a sequel to Kathryn Bigelow’s early 90s classic Point Break was getting produced. None of the original cast was set to return, except for a rumored cameo by Patrick Swayze’s “Bodhi” (this was before his untimely death in 2009), but the highest caliber name attached to the project was its director. Jan de Bont, the man behind Speed, Twister, and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, who’d also worked as a cinematographer on Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and Basic Instinct, was set to direct.

The film would ultimately never see the light of day. However, hardcore Point Break enthusiasts (which include Simon Pegg and his Cornetto comrades) would likely be curious about “what might have been.” Designer Jeffrey Henderson has taken to his tumblr to put up storyboards from many of the projects he’s been associated with, including ones that never got made. Here’s Henderson himself, talking about the aborted sequel:

A few years back, I worked with the immensely talented Jan DeBont, (Speed, etc), on a sequel to the cheesy early 90’s classic, “Point Break’.

In a nutshell, it was about some of the original characters’ kids and their exploits as seafaring, modern day pirates.

It was actually a lot of fun, very much in the spirit of the original, and they had some truly epic action sequences planned!

Unfortunately, it never got made, (as is not uncommon with these types of projects), but I was always a little bummed out about it because I thought the movie would have been a blast.

So, I have to find more of the boards to post, but I had to put this one up tonight. Like the original, this take focused on a band of savvy robbers/ pirates. They wore masks like in the original… except, instead of calling themselves “The Ex Presidents”, (Reagan, Carter, Nixon, LBJ, etc), this new group was called, “The Bush Administration”

The board below would’ve apparently been the opening shot of the film, showing the new group putting on their masks en route to a heist.

Point Break Sequel

While I can’t claim to have had much faith in what the final product would’ve been, I’ll admit I was curious about the project- mainly after the rumored cameo had made the rounds. The whole, “original characters’ kids” thing sounds hokey to me, though.

How about you? Would you have been onboard for a Point Break sequel?
