"Storm Shadow died in the first one and came back in the second one, and then other characters have died and never come back. The G.I. Joe world, the best thing about it is you never know who's coming back and who's not."
The above quote is what director John Chu had to say, in a chat with MTV News, regarding whether or not we might see Channing Tatum return for G.I. Joe 3. The actor's character, Duke, famously died in the second. I say "famously" not because of the way he died, but because the studio apparently regretted the decision so much that they went back and shot more scenes with the actor to capitalize on his incredible 2012- a year where the actor broke out as a massively bankable Hollywood star. They had started production on G.I. Joe: Retaliation before Tatum had achieved blockbuster success with 21 Jump Street, Magic Mike, and The Vow (which made $196 million on a $30 million budget) within a span of four months.
So they went back and added more scenes between Tatum and Dwayne Johnson's Roadblock, and featured Tatum more prominently in the promotional materials for Retaliation. Now with the above quote from Chu, it would appear that the studio may find a way to bring him back from the dead entirely.
Regardless of whether or not Tatum returns, though, Chu (Step-Up 3D) is promising that this is "gonna be a really fun movie. We're taking it in a whole new direction." The director also promises that he is "taking it to another level with this one."
Are you excited for a third G.I. Joe film? Would you want to see Tatum brought back?
