Jason Reitman Lines Up ‘The Possibilities’

The PossibilitiesIf you’re a fan of smaller dramas, you have a good reason to be excited here. The forces behind recent gems like The Descendants and Up In The Air are teaming up. And no, George Clooney will not be involved (at least as of now). The writer of the book that The Descendants was based on, Kaui Hart Hemmings, has had her next novel optioned by Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno, Thank You For Smoking), to be turned into a feature film.

The book, entitled The Possibilities, is about a grieving mother that recently lost her son. As she struggles to cope with her loss, she’s visited by a girl with a life-changing secret. The setting is a Colorado ski town.

Jason Reitman, son of Ivan (he of Ghostbusters fame), is currently working on Men, Women & Children, which will star Emma Thompson, Adam Sandler, and Jennifer Garner. His next film will be in theaters Friday, and that’s the Kate Winslett/Josh Brolin-starrer Labor Day.

The Possibilities will arrive in your local book store on May 13, with the film adaptation likely a year or two away from your local indie-centric cinema.

I’m looking forward to see what comes of this. I really enjoyed Descendants, and Reitman’s work has been strong so far. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
