Want A ‘King Arthur’ Movie? How About Six?

guy-ritchie-01King Arthur, the legendary historical figure with more IMDb credits than Samuel L. Jackson, has long been a fascination for Hollywood. Many famous actors have played him, with Clive Owen’s turn in 2004’s King Arthur being the most recent portrayal of him on the big screen. It now looks like Warner Bros has a plan to launch a new, fantastical take on Arthur’s exploits. That’s not all. They want it to span six films, and Guy Ritchie is said to be the frontrunner to helm the first entry of this proposed franchise.

It’s no secret that ever since the Harry Potter films came to a close, Warner Bros has been searching for a new, big tentpole franchise. They were hoping DC Entertainment would fill that void, but with the comic book entity being unable to commit to a set schedule- the kind that has made Marvel and Disney boundless amounts of cash, it looks like the WB is going to pin its hopes on King Arthur.

This fantasy retelling was written by Joby Harold, and will likely expand upon the more magical elements of Arthur’s folklore. Recent attempts at getting a King Arthur project off the ground had Gary Oldman being sought after to play the wizard, Merlin, with Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) and Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, RoboCop) attached to star as Arthur and Lancelot, respectively. But that incarnation, and others, have all stalled. Even Ritchie, himself, was trying to get a version written by John Hodge off the ground before that, too, fell apart.

So Ritchie, still working on The Man From U.N.C.L.E with Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Hugh Grant, may finally be getting his chance to sit with the Knights of The Round Table- even if it’s not the version he’d originally wanted.

What do you think? Is a fantasy retelling of King Arthur’s tale just what the doctor ordered? Or do you have your “Meh. Pass.” stamp out and ready for this one?
