‘The Dark Knight Returns’ To Influence ‘Batman vs Superman’

Batman. The Dark Knight Returns Cover I batman vs supermanEver since the folks behind Man of Steel chose to have Harry Lennix read a snippet from The Dark Knight Returns at Comic Con to reveal that the sequel would be Batman vs Superman, folks have been speculating that Frank Miller’s classic book would have something to do with the plot of the film. Now director Zack Snyder is clarifying exactly how. In an interview with French film magazine, Popcorn, he was translated as saying that the book isn’t necessarily being adapted for Batman vs Superman but that its dynamics are informing the script.

“[…]The comic book will influence the history of Batman Vs. Superman, on which the writer David S. Goyer and myself will work.”

Then he elaborated a bit about what an interesting counterpoint Ben Affleck’s Batman will be to Henry Cavill’s Superman in Batman vs Superman.

Ben brings an interesting counterweight to the performance of Henry in the role of Superman. He has the experience necessary to paint the picture of an older and more advised man than Clark Kent, who bears the scars of a seasoned vigilante while retaining the charm that Bruce Wayne deploys when present in the world.”

It should be noted that this was translated by someone over at Comic Book Therapy, and I wasn’t able to scratch up much else about Popcorn Magazine. Everyone is running with these quotes, but I can’t seem to track down the actual issue they’re in, or even an online version of the french interview itself. I point this out because I wanted to see exactly when these comments were made, since Snyder doesn’t mention Chris Terrio at all. For all we know, he said this before the Academy Award-winning writer was brought on to retool the Batman vs Superman script.

Batman vs Superman is currently setting up shop and preparing for a long shoot in Michigan.
