Has ‘Uncharted’ Found Its Director?

uncharted_drakes_fortune-207450Deadline is reporting that Sony is in talks with Seth Gordon to direct the film adaptation of their video game smash, Uncharted. The film, written by Safe House‘s David Guggenheim, will be a big scale action adventure about one man’s quest to find the lost treasure of El Dorado. While Gordon may seem to be an odd choice, considering his recent hits have been in the comedy genre, with Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief, this would be something of a return to his roots for the director.

Gordon rose to fame when he directed The King of Kong, a celebrated documentary about diehard video gamers that compete to break world records in classic arcade games. At the time, he became immersed in video game culture, and might be just the man to translate what made the Uncharted franchise such a hit for Sony’s Playstation 3 to the screen.

The film version of Uncharted has had a long road to the screen, with several high profile folks attached at one point or another. American Hustle‘s David O. Russell was even once going to handle the film, but that fell through. Actors like Mark Wahlberg and Nathan Fillion have been discussed for the lead role of Nathan Drake, but as of now, there are no actors attached to the project.

If Gordon does, indeed, sign on the dotted line…what if he chose an actor no would typically associate with action films. Just for giggles, what would you think if he turned to the star of his last two films- Jason Bateman- and turned him into an unlikely action star? I’ll admit, I’d be intrigued.
