All right, cool kids, grab onto your hats! Principal Photography for Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron begins today. That means we can expect all kinds of leaked images, extras with loose lips, and other general buzz to emanate from the production for the next few months. All ready, with a report in SA Breaking News, someone connected to the production has revealed that the first ten minutes of the film take place in Johannesburg, South Africa.
"The great thing about this movie is that they are shooting Johannesburg as Johannesburg. Often you will find filmmakers will shoot in Johannesburg and portray the location as Los Angeles. This time around the first 10 minutes of the film will be of Johannesburg," said Desmond Mthembu of the Gautheng Film Commission.
Also uncovered, in a South African Eyewitness News report, is that the first sequences being shot are action scenes- which is why several major roads have been closed off. But another revealing item in the report is that none of the film's leads are in town for the sequence. This leads me to believe that the film will open with a villain wreaking havoc- starting the film off with something explosive to get the ball rolling right away, escalating the threat that brings the team together.
It should also be noted that, for the sake of comparison, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is beginning production now for a film that's set to come out in 15 months- which sounds about right. Meanwhile, over in Michigan, various reports have come out that Batman vs Superman has either begun, or is about to begin, for a film that doesn't come out for another 27 months- which really adds fuel to the theory that WB/DC is secretly shooting more than one movie this year.
Funny how a simple report about Avengers shooting in South Africa could lead to so many separate items.
Back to the point, though, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is officially underway. The countdown to May 1, 2015 has begun. You excited?
