5 Things Happening in the World of Pro Wrestling

– by Tim Jousma

1.CM Punk lost his match against Mickey Gall at UFC 203 this past week. While the outcome was pretty much expected by just about everyone, I have to give the guy credit. He had a dream he wanted to realize and despite the list of injuries he’s obtained through the years in the wrestling ring as well as being in his late thirties, an older age to start competing in combat sports like MMA, he fulfilled his dream. Not many people can say they did that especially with such odds stacked against them. With that being said, folks had some fun after the match creating some meme’s. While some weren’t in the best of taste, there was a funny one. I’ll leave that here.

2.TJ Perkins won the inaugural WWE Cruiserweight Classic, which was shown exclusively on the WWE Network. As the winner, he also becomes the WWE Cruiserweight Champion and will fight on the Raw brand with other wrestlers that were signed during the tournament. I have to say I enjoyed the presentation of the CWC. It had a real sporting event type feel to it which was needed in order to let the audience know the history of some of the competitors performing. My fear going forward is, despite the momentum that was built for these performers, they’ll be given two minute matches on Raw and no screen time to get them over since they’re smaller guys. I hope I am wrong because with Raw being a three hour show, they could easily devote a nice chunk of time towards the Cruiserweights.

3.Paige issued a statement on Instagram regarding her future with the WWE. Despite the Wellness Policy violation as well as her boyfriend Alberto Del Rio leaving the company, she stated she has no plans on leaving the company which is welcome news. While she hasn’t been used effectively of late, she’s a talented performer who could really be a long term asset for the company. In regards to her Wellness Policy violation, she stated that while she did not actually fail a test, the reason for the suspension was due to her not sending in the appropriate paperwork in a timely manner. That's not the brightest reason to lose thirty days worth of pay but me thinks she'll not do that again.

4.At the tapings for the next round of NXT episodes, it was announced that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic would occur for a second year. A tournament was started with the finals being announced for the NXT:Takeover special which will occur in Toronto the night before Survivor Series. I’m glad it’s back. While this is an entertainment show, the premise what we’re watching is that it is supposed to be a sport. A tournament not only gives them a few weeks of programing that pretty much writes itself, you have the chance to create stories of underdog teams winning matches they looked destined to lose as well as stories of teams that break up and fight each other. This will be interesting to watch.

5.On Smackdown Live this past Tuesday, it was announced that at the next Smackdown Pay Per View, No Mercy, WWE World Champion AJ Styles will face off against John Cena and Dean Ambrose for the title. Triple threat matches are a unique beast that can be tough to pull off. While I’m not a fan of this type of match, the ability of the performers in question gives this match a shot at being pretty darn good so I can’t wait to see it.
