Where Are The Defenders During Events In The Punisher?

The Punisher arrives on Netflix later this week, bringing Marvel fans their first non-Defenders character to the streaming service. So when do the events in The Punisher take place and where are the rest of the Defenders?

Showrunner Steve Lightfoot (Dexter) has made a gritty, realistic take on Marvel’s ultimate vigilante, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), that is tonally and visually distinct from all of the other Marvel series on Netflix. With the exception of Daredevil‘s Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), this is an entirely solo outing. The Punisher‘s main plot, a government cover-up and conspiracy, takes place between Daredevil Season 2 and The Defenders.

CinemaBlend spoke with Lightfoot ahead of the show’s big premiere to learn about some of the differences between The Punisher and those other Marvel series, in particular the status and proximity of the other street-level heroes:

“When I came in to take the show on, it was always very clear to me that [Marvel] wanted it to sort of tell its own story and run on its own track and not really intersect with what was happening in The Defenders. That was part of the brief. I guess I could speculate on the reasons for that, but I think from what I understand the original concept for the four characters that became The Defenders was always the plan and The Punisher spun out of that. But very much certainly when I came in the brief was always that it was to be its own show and its own thing separate from that.”

It makes a lot of sense for The Punisher to stand on its own, and given the lackluster plot and execution in The Defenders, maybe that’s for the best. Given that Castle will almost certainly kill someone in every episode (one hopes), any presence of Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, or Iron Fist would only result in additional conflicts that divert from the main plot.

So, we apparently won’t even get a cameo from Daredevil, which is a shame given the character’s connections. Fortunately, the early word on The Punisher is really strong (72% on Rotten Tomatoes) — the hype appears to be real!
