In case you haven’t met your strange news quota for the day, here’s one for you: it turns out that actor John Turturro is currently filming a spin-off to the hit Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski. That’s right. He’s not in talks, it’s not being developed, it is in production as you read this.
This scoop comes courtesy of the folks over at Birth.Movies.Death. The spin-off is call Going Places, and while it is a spin-off of the Coen Brothers flick, it doubles as a remake of the French sex comedy film called Les Valseuses (also released under the English title Going Places). According to BMD, the film follows “two petty thieves, Turturro’s Jesus and [Bobby] Cannavale’s Petey, compete to give a woman (Tautou) her first orgasm after she’s roped into their hijinks. Sarandon also ends up in their company, playing a criminal who just got out after a long stint in prison.”
The film is reportedly already two weeks into filming and is being shot from a script Turturro himself. In addition, the cast is set to include the likes of Bobby Cannavale, Audrey Tautou and Susan Sarandon.
Without a doubt this is a hell of an unexpected development, and while the initial knee-jerk reaction from me is to hate this (it’s not like anyone really cared to see a Jesus Quintana spin-off), I’m finding it hard to do so. This is such a random thing, that I can only expect that Turturro would’ve only gone through with this project if he felt it was a worthwhile tale to tell — and something that was within the character’s wheelhouse. Plus, with the exception of the Adam Sandler films, Turturro isn’t normally one to star in garbage flicks, let alone spearhead ones.
As far as we know, the Coens aren’t involved in Going Places, and the film doesn’t even have a distributor right now. That being said, I doubt Turturro would’ve gone forward with this had he not already had the general blessing from his frequent collaborators.
