Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father Gets A Captivating Trailer

Netflix is absolutely killing it on multiple fronts. In addition to being the new standard of quality when it comes to television programming, they’re also hard at work acquiring films and producing them from scratch, in hopes of disrupting yet another consumer industry. As we’ve mentioned multiple times here at LRM, 2017 has been a year of big swings in this regard, with War Machine, Okja, Death Note, and Bright all serving as high profile films that can exclusively be seen on their streaming service. Another original film that’s been getting less attention is First They Killed My Father.

First They Killed My Father is a film based on the memoirs of Loung Ung, a survivor of a regime in Cambodia known for its totalitarian nature. It is directed by Angelina Jolie and is filmed from a script adapted by both Jolie and Ung herself. The film was first announced back in 2015, and premiered in Cambodia back in February.

The official synopsis for the memoirs on which the film is based is belwo:

“One of seven children of a high-ranking government official, Loung Ung lived a privileged life in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh until the age of five. Then, in April 1975, Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge army stormed into the city, forcing Ung’s family to flee and, eventually, to disperse. Loung was trained as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans, her siblings were sent to labor camps, and those who survived the horrors would not be reunited until the Khmer Rouge was destroyed. Harrowing yet hopeful, Loung’s powerful story is an unforgettable account of a family shaken and shattered, yet miraculously sustained by courage and love in the face of unspeakable brutality.”

We have to say, this trailer was absolutely captivating. I’d gone into this trailer expecting not a whole lot, and managed to come out wanting to know more about the memoirs on which the film was based, as well as the making of the movie itself. Could this be a film that Netflix pushes for Oscar consideration later this year? We wouldn’t be surprised if that was their plan.

First They Killed My Father is set to hit Netflix on September 15, 2017.
