Aquaman Pushed Back To December 2018

Aquaman is the film that, ironically enough, I was looking forward to the most in the DC Extended Universe. While I have a pretty solid idea of either what I expect out of a film from each of the Justice League members, I have no idea what I want or what I expect out of an Aquaman flick. This alone makes the prospect of the movie enticing to me when compared to the others.

Looks like I’ll have to wait a little bit longer. Warner Bros has now announced that Aquaman has been delayed for a second time. Originally, the film was slated for a July 27, 2018 release, but last December, Warner Bros gave us a new October 4, 2018 release date, and given the amount of shuffling they’ve done with these movies, it seemed like that would stick. However, now it looks like we’ll have to wait two more months before its new December 21, 2018 release.

Given that it’s only two months, it seems safe to assume that this has nothing to do with a delay in progress — if that were the case, it would have gotten pushed out much farther. Unlike, say, The Flash or The Batman, this doesn’t seem to be reflective of development issues. Additionally, with this new Christmas release, it seems to imply a real confidence for the studio, as Christmas time has become a box office boon over the past few years.

It’s also the spot that James Cameron’s Avatar 2 used to occupy before Cameron stated that they weren’t going to make that date. Warner Bros likely saw this as the prime opportunity to nab that spot, and took it before anyone else could do so. Unless Disney decides to announce Star Wars Episode IX with that release date (which is possible if they decided to release two films a year), it’s likely Aquaman will take that weekend.

While there is no comparable live-action film, one potential bit of competition comes from the animated Spider-Man film featuring Miles Morales as the webslinger. While there definitely is some real crossover here, the true crossover will depend on the tone they go for in this film. We’ll have to wait and see.
