AQUAMAN: Wan Promises An Epic Love Between Arthur And Mera

Something that the three DCEU films so far have been very light on is romance, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Fans have long tired of the somewhat forced romantic subplots that have found their way into just about every superhero film ever. While Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice technically had that, with Henry Cavill’s Clark and Amy Adams’ Lois, I don’t think anyone was blown away by their chemistry, and it was pretty clear that their connection was a bit of an afterthought for Zack Snyder. Director James Wan, though, who is set to helm Aquaman, seems to think his movie is going to bring the love in a big way when it comes out in 2018.

I really want to get the classic action-adventure-romance aspect through that, and I think that’s kind of fun,” he tells Bustle in a new interview. This comes after comments last week that he was thinking of films like Romancing The Stone and Raiders of The Lost Ark while prepping for the film, which both featured macho tough guys meeting their match with strong, tenacious women.

It starts off initially with them not quite clicking with each other,” Wan continued. “But then as the story progresses as they learn to try and work together, they get closer and closer. I think those stories are always such a great place for a filmmaker like myself to have fun with my actors.” The actors in question are Jason Momoa, who’s playing Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, and Amber Heard, who plays Mera.

I think that dynamic will be really interesting between the two. Amber’s character is super strong, she’s very powerful as well. You don’t wanna mess with her,” says the Aussie filmmaker. “I think Amber will bring that sense of strength, but at the same time, we also want someone who has a sort of feminine quality to her as well. She’s a bit of a contrast to Momoa, who’s more of a muscular machine almost.

Momoa is no stranger to this dynamic, as he was able to bring it to life when he appeared on Game of Thrones. In that show, we met him as a bit of a savage brute, but then we saw the character evolve because of his love for Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). He demonstrated an ability to turn on the soulful eyes of a ruthless warrior with a heart of gold, and I get the feeling that Wan will want him to explore that territory again in Aquaman.

We’ll get a taste of the dynamic between Aquaman and Mera when Snyder’s Justice League comes out on November 17, 2017.
