Now, of course we know that Drax is played by David Bautista, a wrestler who made his way into the acting world much like Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) did. I must admit, I was surprised just how spot on he played Drax the Destroyer when we first saw him tackle the role in Guardians of the Galaxy. While the character is near-unrecognizable from his comic book counterpart, there's no denying that Bautista has done an admirable job with him.
Bautista has always been incredibly humble about his career, and despite the bang-up job he's done in the film's he's been in, it's understandable that even he would be a bit nervous about meeting Robert Downey Jr., who's an undeniable genius of the acting craft. Speaking with Good Morning America, Bautista made it clear how much of a fan he was of Downey's:
“Robert Downey Jr.’s been on a pedestal with me since I was a very young man. I’ve just always admired him and been a fan. I’ve said for years and years and years that I hope the crossover happened because I thought that Drax would have such great interactions with Tony Stark and Robert Downey Jr. It just all kind of came to fruition and actually its gonna happen and it's good. It's really good. It's better than I ever thought it would be.”
Bautista then discussed how his first meeting with Downey help put him at ease for their eventual scenes together in Avengers: Infinity War:
“I went to the premiere of London of [Avengers: Age of Ultron] and Robert went out of his way to come and meet me and say how much he loved me in the first film and that meant the world to me. So that put me at kind of an automatic comfort level with him. So as soon as we hit the stage, man, there was no pressure there, there were no walls, I just felt like this guy was very supportive of me and I felt very comfortable with him. I think that’s just him. He’s a very giving actor across the board. But just for me personally I felt totally at ease with him and it makes for great chemistry when you’re comfortable with someone.”
Sounds like we have something to look forward to in Avengers: Infinity War. Of course, it's no secret that we'll finally get to see the Guardians alongside The Avengers, and honestly I cant wait for the drama when Star-Lord meets Black Widow, and just how well that will go over with Gamora.
A few things said in this quick interview was Bautista's desire to work with Robert Downey Jr., and how RDJ basically patted him on the back and befriended him quickly. So, you have a man that could kill RDJ in, what, eight seconds, so intimidated by him that it took some nice encouraging words of Bautista's achievements, and RDJ simply being a cool guy. I think the world is very happy that Downey did not go down the path we suspected he might have in the '80s.
We still have plenty of time to wait for Avengers: Infinity War, and luckily I think we may have one of the best Marvel movies due up first with Thor: Ragnarok. I for one can't wait to see their interaction on the screen.
What do you guys think? Some infinity Stones may be used, and we may see an Ironman vs. Drax battle, or even scarier: a Vision vs. Thor battle. It is cool that these two actors allegedly have bonded, but what are we in store for? Opinions?
