Avengers: Infinity War - Don Cheadle Implies War Machine Will Be Back In Action

– by Joseph Medina

Last year’s Captain America: Civil War saw all of the Avengers go head-to-head against one another in the now-famous airport scene brawl. On the whole, while the scene was 17 minutes of fun, it was hard to escape the idea that the stakes weren’t exactly clear. These guys weren’t going to kill each other, so why fight? Yet despite that, not everyone made it out unscathed. By the end of the film, Rhodey’s injuries led to his paralysis from the waste down.

This would seem to imply that his days as War Machine were numbered, right? Perhaps we could do some low-level fights, but there’s no way he’d be up to Avengers-level any time soon. It wouldn't the first time our assumptions were wrong. It looks like his spinal injury will be less than invasive in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.

Speaking with Good Morning America, Don Cheadle teased War Machine’s triumphant return in the upcoming Marvel flick.

“But when you have somebody like Tony [Stark], who is a master of tech and can create things that can get you over the hump, then you can walk again…it’s an augmentation…it’s semi-bionic. I’m like Lee Majors, but twice. I’m like the Twelve Million Dollar Man — Sixty Million Dollar Man, probably by 2018, with inflation.”

While Cheadle didn’t necessarily confirm that he’d be back to fighting alongside Iron Man, at the very least, he’ll be walking around. Of course, someone like Rhodey wouldn’t get sidelined very easily, so it seems very close to a confirmation that he’ll be back in top form.

In some ways, this does seem to take some of the teeth out of what happened in Captain America: Civil War. At the end of it all, were there any stakes? I defer to the directors, who in the commentary, felt that Civil War was a divorce story. The characters already had to deal with the issues of the divide between Cap and Tony, and if someone had died as a result, that wouldn’t be in keeping with the spirit of the story, and would also make any bridge-building between parties impossible.
