Avengers: Infinity War – Scarlett Johansson Teases 60+ Characters In The Film

I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that Marvel Studios’ upcoming opus, Avengers: Infinity War, is going to have a ton of characters in it. Like both of the other Avengers films before it, Avengers: Infinity War will serve as something of a culmination of everything that came before it. Plus, given that a non-Avengers movie, Captain America: Civil War sported around a dozen superheroes, you know that Infinity War will have to bring its A-game.

But how many characters can we expect? Speaking with Stephen Colbert, Black Widow herself, Scarlett Johansson revealed the most minor of details: around how many characters we can expect — namely how many we can expect in one scene in the film.

Here’s what she had to say:

“I do think there are, I think at one point, 61 or 62 Marvel characters. Yeah, there’s a lot. I think in one particular scene, there’s like 32 of us. There are so many of us, I don’t even know who’s a Marvel character, and who’s a crew member.”

Again, the closest point of reference we really can make is that airport scene in Captain America: Civil War. In that scene, there were 12 superheroes fighting, and for one glorious shot, we got to see all of them clashing with one another at high speeds. Of course, the big difference here (we think) is that our heroes will spend less time fighting with each other, and more time fighting the villains, who we assume will make up some of that 30-plus figure — but it’s an impressive number, nonetheless.

It’s almost quaint to look back at the original Avengers, which only featured six heroes. Back then, it was a revelation that audiences would follow four separate franchises that build up to one super-franchise. Would they even be able to understand what’s going on, or was that expecting too much of a viewer? Of course, we now live in an age of shared universes, and with each additional film, Marvel has proved that they know what they’re doing, and that they can still make things interesting.

Here’s hoping they continue that trend with Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
