BAD BOYS 3 Is “Very, Very Close” To Getting Made Says Will Smith

No matter the film, you can pretty much guess that there’s someone out there that’s clamoring for a sequel. In fact, there are numerous sequels in Hollywood that have been in development for years and years. One such sequel that’s come up in the trades every few years since the release of its predecessor in the early 2000s is Bad Boys 3 (which was recently given the moniker Bad Boys for Life).

While Bad Boys II (or even the first Bad Boys) may not have had critical appeal, but the fun action and chemistry between stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence was enough to bring in nearly $300 million worldwide. In the years since, fans have been hungry to see these two reunite. In recent months, writer/director Joe Carnahan (who directed The Grey and wrote the most recent draft of the Uncharted adaptation) was hired to take the baton from Michael Bay, who directed the previous entries. News since then has seen the project inching along, but never at the speed with which fans would like to see.

A few months back, Bad Boys co-star Martin Lawrence stated that the film would begin production in March, and last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host asked Will Smith if this was still indeed the fact. While Smith didn’t confirm this March shoot date, he was very optimistic in his response:

“It is very, very, very close. It is very, very close. It’s very close. … We do one a decade!”

With both the lead talent on board and the director, we know it’s only a matter of time before this Bad Boys for Life film hits the ground running, but as with all projects, actors are usually hesitant to make any definitive statements without everything first being in place.

If nothing else, the great chemistry between Smith and Lawrence is something this franchise has always had going for it, and Smith reaffirmed that in his further comments to Kimmel.

“Let me tell you, I love that dude. That’s among the best times I’ve ever had making movies. So I’m looking forward to it.”

We’ll see in the coming months if they end up making that March shoot date!
