‘BATMAN v SUPERMAN’ Gets Record-Breaking March Monday Numbers

Well it’s time to add another little twist to the tale of BATMAN v SUPERMAN‘s theater run.

After a domestic weekend opening of $166 million, things seemed to be okay on a surface level. However, if you took a look at the day-by-day gross of the film over the weekend, it seemed like interest for it descended rapidly, and by the time Monday had dawned, the film had only taken in about $34 million from that Sunday prior–a dramatic dropoff from the Friday opening of $81.5 million.

If you listen to some doomsday fans out there, this would seem to imply that BATMAN v SUPERMAN would be off to one heck of a drop this coming weekend. But with 45% of schools on spring break, perhaps this isn’t the case. According to Deadline, BATMAN v SUPERMAN made around $15 million on its Monday box office sales. This puts it ahead of the previous March Monday record-holder, THE HUNGER GAMES, which took in around $10 million on Monday, March 26 back in 2012. Though it is worth noting that DEADPOOL managed to rake in $19.76 million on the Monday following its release–but that’s a film that exceeded expectations from the onset.

This is about a 55% drop from Sunday’s numbers. For comparison, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON had a 73% dropoff from Sunday to Monday, and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES had about a 55% dropoff.

This brings the film’s four-day count to $181.06 million, just ahead of THE DARK KNIGHT’s $182.9, and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES‘ $180.3 million.

The Deadline report goes on to say that BATMAN v SUPERMAN is expected to have a 65% drop from last weekend to this coming weekend, but if these numbers are proving anything, it’s that this film is completely unpredictable. I’m not saying the film will do great numbers, but I’m also not so positive that we’re in for a grim second weekend for the movie.

Between the terrible critic reviews and the mixed fans response, there may be enough curious moviegoers out there who want to see the film so they can make an opinion for themselves. Needless to say, we’ll all be eagerly awaiting the sales numbers.
