Benicio Del Toro Talks 'Star Wars Episode VIII"

– by Joseph Medina

The age of "Star Wars" is nearly upon us. After around a decade of no "Star Wars" movies, "The Force Awakens" will be the film to open up the franchise to whole new era. Now, every year, we'll be given some kind of "Star Wars" film--be it a saga film or an anthology film. So much news about the franchise has been released that "The Force Awakens" almost feels like old news, even though the movie hasn't come out yet.

Fans are already curious about what to expect from "Star Wars Episode VIII" which is slated for a May 26, 2017--only about a year and a half away! In a recent interview with Empire Magazine while promoting his new film, "Sicario," confirmed villain of the film, Benicio del Toro, talked about his love of the franchise.

"I grew up with lobby cards of 'Star Wars' glued to my wall--back when they had lobby cards...[I especially like] the first 'Star Wars,' 'Empire Strikes Back,' and 'Return of the Jedi,' those three were movies I saw as a youngster that kind of marked me, especially the first one."
One of the aforementioned lobby cards del Toro grew up with.

Del Toro was then asked by the outlet what he thought Rian Johnson, director of "Star Wars Episode VIII" would bring to the franchise. After a few seconds of mulling over the question in his head, del Toro gave an answer.

"I think like a cool scifi realism, if I may say that, if that makes any sense. You know, I love his film 'Looper,' and his other work. I just like talking to him about the film. I think he's one of those new talented people that 'Star Wars' is hiring to infuse the franchise with new steroids."

Unfortunately, as with all kinds of big movie news, del Toro was unable to disclose any real information about his character or role in the "Episode VIII." As of this writing, all we really know about him is that he's the villain. This is no huge surprise. After all, we still have two "Star Wars" films to get through before we even reach "Episode VIII," so there'll be plenty of time between now and then to get a better feel for the character.

Until then, we'll just have to wait and see how things play out. Are you looking forward to Benicio del Toro's role in "Star Wars Episode VIII?" Let us know in the comments down below.
