Malcolm D. Lee, cousin of Spike and director of both Best Man movies, is apparently close to inking a deal to helm Barbershop 3. The first two films were considerable hits for MGM, and even spawned a spin-off (Beauty Shop) as well as a short-lived TV series adaptation. Ice Cube and Cedric The Entertainer are set to reprise their roles in this return to the series, which has been dormant since 2004.
Lee is riding high on the success of The Best Man Holiday, which made over $71 million on a $17 million budget. He has a third Best Man film on the way, coming on April 15, 2016. Despite the fact that it’s been over 10 years since the last Barbershop, Deadline is reporting that MGM is fast-tracking the project.
Tim Story and Kevin Rodney Sullivan directed the first two films, respectively. As of now, no word on who will be writing the comedy, or when it is slated for release.
