This past Friday, mainstream audiences were introduced to the world of Black Panther with a badass trailer. For a long time, one of the major criticisms of Marvel Studios has been the same-y feeling of a lot of their films. They seem to have taken this criticism to heart, and with films like Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, they seem to be remedying that criticism.
However, if there is one thing that Black Panther is set to have above any other film thus far it’s the potential for world building. Most other Marvel Studios films have our character hopping all over the place, be it all over the galaxy, or various other locations. While Black Panther will likely continue that tradition on some level, they will be also be building the world of Wakanda. To the rest of the world, Wakanda is a developing country with few technological advancements, but as we learned in the trailer, all that is just a front. In reality, Wakanda is one of the most technologically advanced civilizations on the planet, and as such, they have their share of technological wizards.
Enter Princess Shuri, portrayed by Letitia Wright in the film. We only got the briefest of glimpses of her in the trailer, but in the comics, she is the half sister of T’Challa and future Black Panther. Needless to say, she has some smarts of her own. But how smart is she?
According to director Ryan Coogler (via EW), Shuri is not only a fighter, but a great scientist “on par with Iron Man’s Tony Stark. She has spent her life researching and experimenting with Vibranium — the same metal that makes up Captain America’s shield (a metal that can only be found in Wakanda), and she even has a pair of panther-shaped hand-blasters that we we can’t wait to see in action.
We’re very interested to see how the MCU utilizes Shuri in the future. If nothing else, we’d love to see her interact with the likes of Tony and Bruce Banner.
Black Panther hits theaters on February 16, 2018.
