Blade Runner 2049 Expected To Have Modest $50 Million Opening This Weekend

Blade Runner 2049 may be wowing critics across the internet, but it doesn’t sound like the film will make too big of a splash financially. According to Yahoo! Movies, the sequel is looking to earn something in the realm of $45 million to $50 million domestically in its opening weekend.

Now, that’s by no means a bad haul, but considering its $185 million price tag, it’s not a number that wows. That being said, it looks like the anticipated performance to this film is being compared to that of Mad Max: Fury Road, which made $378 million off its $150 million budget. It didn’t set any records, but it managed to make a little bit of money all while serving as something of a prestige piece.

If we’re to believe all the reviews so far, Blade Runner 2049 will definitely at least be something of a prestige piece for the studios involved. So long as they manage to make a modest profit, everyone may be content with the extensive investment made. But there are also signs the film may do better than expected.

MovieTickets.com is reporting that its advance sales are double that of 2015’s The Martian, which took in $54 million in its opening weekend. Add in the beautiful trailers and high praise online, it may very well surprise everyone with a stronger opening. Plus, it’ll be the only new big budget movie for the next couple weeks (before the real Oscar contender film Geostorm hits).
