Catch-22 Trailer Captures The Nihilistic Hilariousness Of The Novel

Catch-22 isn’t exactly the easiest story to adapt for the screen. It’s a dense book structured completely out of order and it has more characters than you can shake a stick at. Additionally, it accomplishes the incredibly difficult task of being both darkly cynical and totally hilarious. It also manages to criticize the nature of warfare without it feeling preachy.

The first teaser for Catch-22 managed to lock down some of the more serious aspects of the story, but the comedy of it wasn’t really a focus. In this one, we get the iconic scene between Doc Daneeka and Yossarian where the namesake of Catch-22 is explained. We also get a funny “Who’s on first?” type moment between Clooney’s Lt. Scheisskopf and a stenographer (though I don’t know for the life of me what the character’s name is).

The rest of the trailer is a lot of talk about just how much human lives do not matter in war, and it’s all capped off with a funny conversation about how pointless it is to worry when everyone’s going to end up dead anyway. As someone who adored the novel and was very disappointed in that movie from decades ago, I think they very well could have nailed it with this. But what do you think? Let us know down below!

Catch-22 premieres on May 17 on Hulu!
