Chris Evans Loves Playing CAPTAIN AMERICA. Would Do It In Space! Or With Spidey!

It’s funny to think of the skepticism that met the announcement of Chris Evans as Captain America. When Marvel Studios revealed that Evans would be playing Steve Rogers in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGERS, there was a ton of But he was already The Human Torch!” combined with “He always plays cool smart asses! That’s all wrong for Cap!”

And then a funny thing happened: Not only did he hit it out of the park in that first movie, but he has since become the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His last two movies are considered to be among the best of Marvel’s 13 cinematic entries so far, and his portrayal of Captain America has been hailed as one of the best actor/character combinations in a comic book movie since Christopher Reeve first donned Superman’s cape in 1978.

In the months leading up to CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, there were plenty of rumors that Cap may bite the dust in this film. Many are expecting Rogers to die at some point, and for Falcon or The Winter Soldier to take up the shield. There’s also the matter that the actor’s contract with Marvel is just about at its end (there’s only one film left on his six movie deal!), so writing him out would make sense for the studio. But now that the movie has been out a few weeks, it’s well-known that those rumors didn’t come to fruition. Cap is very much alive within the MCU, and so that means Evans can still put on his reds, whites, and blues to kick some ass in another movie.

Evans has said, perhaps fueling the speculation that he was going to die in CIVIL WAR, that he’s scared to walk away from these movies. He’s grown to love them, and has said that he’s ready to tackle the role whenever Marvel decides they need him.

His excitement about the role reared its head again this week, in a chat with MTV. He was asked about which movies he’d love pop up in, now that Cap has gone rogue and isn’t bound by SHIELD or an obligation to The Avengers.

Guardians would be fun, wouldn’t it?“ Evans asked, playfully referring to GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2, before adding, “but it’s very outer spacey. Cap’s more of an Earth-bound guy.” So which earth-bound Marvel flick would he get the biggest kick out of? “Maybe the next Spider-Mans. Those are going to be fantastic, and I think Tom [Holland]’s just a great actor, so that might be a fun one to pop up into.”

Some might recall that Evans was present for Holland’s final screen test for the role of Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. Evans has always spoken effusively of the actor’s work, and it sounds like he’d love to explore a story arc that had Steve from Brooklyn cross paths with Peter from Queens.

We can file this under “Unlikely,” since SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING already seems to have a lot going on and squeezing in a Captain America appearance would be a bit much. Mainly, it’s just cool to see an actor be this jovial about a role after five movies (and one just-for-fun cameo in THOR: THE DARK WORLD).

Are you hoping Evans sticks around as Captain America? Do you want his character to get killed off? Want him to sign another six-picture deal or just pop up every now and again? Discuss!
