Chris Rock’s Saw Gets Pushed Up To A Summer 2020 Release

Recently, it was reported that comedian/actor/filmmaker Chris Rock developed an idea for another Saw film. The long-time fan of the horror franchise plans to reimagine the film and some “in the know” are calling his idea “Saw on steroids.” Now, it seems Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures are fully on board with his approach. So much so that the release date has ben pushed up.

Deadline is reporting that the studios are pushing up the release of Rock’s reimagining to next summer. the film will star Rock alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, and Marisol Nichols. Deadline explains the plot as follows:

Rock will play a police detective investigating a series of grizzly crimes and Jackson portrays Rock’s father. Minghella is William Schenk, Rock’s partner, and Nichols is Capt. Angie Garza, Rock’s boss.

Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV, is returning to direct. The script is written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Jigsaw). Saw producing duo Mark Burg and Oren Koules will return and join alongside Rock and Saw veteran Daniel Heffner. Original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell will be serving as executive producers on the project.

No word yet on an exact date, but the fact that they have pushed up the release means they are definitely excited to get the film completed and out to he masses. On the other hand, while Saw films are typically released in October, the news that David Gordon Green and Danny McBride are returning to the Halloween franchise and releasing two films on back-to-back Halloweens starting in 2020 may be a factor in the summer move. Perhaps Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures are not looking to compete against a horror icon, fresh off of its box office success last October, during the haunting holiday.
