Comic Book Preview: Magdalena #1

– by Emmanuel Gomez

Tomorrow Top Cow Productions Inc. will release their new series Magdalena. It is written by Tini Howard and Ryan Cady. The artwork is done by Chrisian DiBari and Mike Spicer. The Magdalena is a woman that protects the world from demons and beasts. According to legend those who are chosen are part of a divine blood line from Jesus and "the lost apostle" Mary Magdalene. They are also armed with a relic called the Spear of Destiny which according to the story had pierced Christ's side at the crucifixion. The character first made her appearance in the 90's in the Darkness series and since then has had it's own series once in 2010 of 12 issues.

Now the character is back with a story featuring the current Magdalena wounded and trying to find her replacement. Here is the official synopsis and press release sent to us from Top Cow Productions Inc.:

MAGDALENA #1
Story: Tini Howard & Ryan Cady
Artist: Christian Dibari
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Troy Peteri
Women's History Cover: Roberta Ingranata

The Magdalena has always defended the world from demonic evil, empowered by the blood of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene in her veins. But when a brush with death leaves
her gravely wounded, Patience decides to seek out the next in the bloodline and train her replacement. The replacement, meanwhile, is having enough trouble with finding
her purpose even without the whole holy- warrior gig.

It opens up with a great idea of the Magdalena loosing strength due to the fact that in this day and age people are starting to loose faith in God and thus evil has thus evil has had the opportunity to get stronger, which leads Magdalena to be hurt in combat. It will be interesting to see if we see any of the other artifacts in that universe show up during the story as it is well known that Top Cow has a rich history filled with stories of different mystic relics.

Check out the covers as well as the previews for the book below. Magdalena #1 will be available at comic book shops everywhere Wednesday, March 21st.
