Comic Book Review: Bloodshot Salvation #4 Rampage’s Origin

This week Valiant Entertainment takes a step back in Bloodshot Salvation #4 written by Jeff Lemire with artwork by Mico Suayan. With present day Bloodshot stuck in the future, and flashback Bloodshot having had his nanites deactivated, this seemed like a perfect time to look back at the origins of Bloodshot’s newest adversary Rampage.

In previous issues we have already met the Scarred Man, who is a military contractor and head of Omen. His operations absorbed all the assets of Project Rising Spirit, including the nanite technology that was responsible for the creation of Bloodshot and the tragic events in New York. We have also seen Rampage go after Bloodshot’s daughter and Magic in previous issues. The fourth issue of Bloodshot Salvation finally sheds some light on the connection between Rampage and the Scarred Man.

Without giving away too much, I feel that the connection if a bit cliche, which for a writer like Lemire surprised me. It turns out that they are brothers, Pete (The Scarred Man) and Danny (Rampage) grew up on a farm with an abusive father. After one particular incident, their father’s abuse drives them over the edge causing them to take drastic measures that cause the death of their father as well as the origin of Pete’s scars. By the conclusion of the issue the Scarred Man is hauling away Danny to turn him into Rampage.

Although the story seemed very similar to other origin stories, it was still an enjoyable issue. Mico Suayan’s artwork was done very well, especially the great facial expressions on the characters. I look forward to the next issue has there were a couple of cliff hangers from the third issue that I really want to see resolved. Overall it has been a great series so far, Lemire’s run on Bloodshot since Bloodshot Reborn has been fantastic. I highly recommend his run on Bloodshot to any comic book fan.
