Comic Book Review: Renato Jones #1

Renato Jones #1

Special double-sized first issue! The One% own more than half the world’s wealth. They’ve crashed economies, bought governments, and have amassed more power than any other group in history, but they still don’t have enough. With this kind of power how can anyone make them pay? WHO will make them pay? Enter Renato Jones, a mysterious vigilante out to even the score. When he enters the fray THE SUPER-RICH ARE SUPER F***ED.

What happens if you were to mix Bruce Wayne and Frank Castle together, but instead of just any criminals the hybrid vigilante targets the super rich 1%? Well, then you’d have Renato Jones! I wasn’t sure what to expect from this series but it had Kaare Andrews, so I knew I was in! It’s completely his baby, and that leaves so much room for insane storylines and fantastic artwork! We get everything we need in this first issue, from the origin of just who and what Renato Jones is to why he is doing what he does and who are his targets! It’s all done in a very easily transitioned series of events that showcase the current era storyline mixed with “LOST” style flash back moments. There is a message here and it isn’t even remotely subtle: F*ck the 1%! Renato is here to take down some of the sick wealthy A-holes in the world who feel that anyone without a black card isn’t worth being alive. If issue one is any indication of how extreme Kaare will be going with this series then readers are in for one sick ride!

  • The Hey!: A slow moving start that quickly picks up as more is revealed about Renato and his twisted origins.

  • The Eh: It might be a bit too over the top for some readers.

  • The What?!: Very intense original sequences all done black and white.

  • Who should read this series?: Are you a fan of Mark Millar’s Kickass or Nemesis? Then you will feel right at home with the violence and gore that Renato Jones has in store for you. Fan of Kaare Andrews? Well you won’t be disappointed here.

  • Why should you buy this book?: It’s the perfect jumping on point as aside from just being an issue 1 it gives the full fleshed out backstory of how all of this madness began while also hinting at where it will be going.
