Cowboy Bebop: John Cho Will Play Spike Spiegel In Netflix Live-Action Series, Cast Rounds Out

See you, space cowboy. No, seriously. It actually seems like we actually will be seeing the space cowboys incredibly soon in live-action form on Netflix. As with properties like Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, and Alita: Battle Angel, Cowboy Bebop is one of those shows that seemed destined for adaptation. Given its more Western feel (as in Western style of storytelling, not the genre), it blends in perfectly with a lot of the material out there…but is it something that could actually be pulled off in live-action form? That remains to be seen.

But Netflix is inching closer and closer to making this an actual reality, and today, THR is reporting an interesting solid leading cast. Playing the suave and enigmatic Spike Spiegel is Star Trek‘s John Cho. For those unfamiliar with the anime, Spike is described by Netflix as “an impossibly cool ‘cowboy’ (bounty hunter) with a deadly smile, a wry wit, and style to spare. He travels the solar system with his ex-cop partner, Jet, pursuing the future’s most dangerous bounties with a combination of charm, charisma — and deadly Jeet Kune Do.”

Taking on the role of Spike’s partner, Jet Black, is Luke Cage actor Mustafa Shakir. Jet is described as “one of the few honest cops in the solar system before an ultimate betrayal robbed him of all that he loved, forcing him into a vagabond life of hunting bounties to put food on the table. Jet is an inveterate jazz enthusiast and Captain of the Bebop.”

Playing the femme fatale Faye Valentine is Mexican-American actress Daniella Pineda, who recently made a splash in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Faye is a thief and con artist whose own plans often collide with Spike’s own.

Finally, playing Vicious, Spike’s ex-partner who is now out to kill him is Alex Hassell, who I’ve only seen in the Matt Damon film Suburbicon. The existence of Vicious as a character, however, is interesting, as it proves the show is likely going for the same overall story as the anime. This is fantastic to hear, but also means this show will likely only last the planned 10 episodes.

Daredevil director Alex Garcia Lopez will be helming the first two episodes of the series.
