Damon Lindelof Developing Watchmen Series For HBO

Watchmen, written by Alan Moore with art by Dave Gibbons, is considered one of the greatest graphic novels of all time. Watchmen appeared on Time‘s 2005 list of “All-Time 100 Greatest Novels” as well as the publication’s 2009 “Top 10 Graphic Novels.” The legacy of Watchmen has been felt in other forms of media as well, with DC launching Before Watchman prequel series not too many years ago, a motion comic adaptation released in 2009, an R-rated animated film that Warner Bros. announced this April, and, of course, the live-action feature film directed by Zack Snyder of 300 and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice fame. Now, it appears another Watchmen adaptation is in the works, and it just may be the best venue for the project yet, aside from the masterful original comics.

Variety reports that Damon Lindelof, creator of Lost and HBO’s The Leftovers, is in talks to develop Watchmen as an HBO series. HBO attempted to adapt Watchmen back in 2014, but Lindelof’s version is said to be brand new and will start from scratch, not using anything already developed by HBO. Aside from that, not much is known about the project.

I may be in the minority, but I really liked Snyder’s film version of the 1985 graphic novel, though it can’t compare to Moore’s original writing. It’s my favorite Snyder project; my main gripe with the film being the fact that too much was condensed to fit a film’s typical run-time (though it is a looong film). Watchmen always seemed more like a TV project to me, especially now in the era where prestige TV can be as good as the best movie. Doing each issue as an episode would allow the story to breathe, and with HBO behind this new version of Watchmen, we know budget and graphic content will not be an issue. As long as we’re not adding story-lines, or using Before Watchmen to support multiple seasons, I’m totally on board!

Does this mean Warner Bros.’ animated project is on hold? Are the two related? Is the studio just going full Dr. Manhattan on us and producing both?

What do you think of another Watchmen adaptation, this time on HBO? Should they wait longer to distance themselves from Snyder’s film? Or should they not do it at all? Let us know in the comment section below!
