Dave Bautista Discusses His Experience Shooting Avengers: Infinity War

One of the more exciting aspects of Avengers: Infinity War is the fact that the Guardians of the Galaxy will finally cross paths with the Avengers! Who will have the most banter with Star-Lord? What will Rocket think of Tony Stark’s tech? Will Groot and Hulk be best friends? Who will be more clueless, Thor or Drax? The possibilities are endless, but unfortunately the length of the film will not be.

Dave Bautista had an interview with Yahoo! Movies to talk about his new film Bushwick, and of course his Marvel character, Drax, came up. Bautista revealed who he shares the most screentime with and how the directing Russo brothers let him riff:

“I have a lot of interaction with Chris [Pratt] and Pom [Klementieff, who plays Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2‘s breakout character Mantis], and it’s always great when they let me play the straight man to Chris’s humor. When we said something funny, [the Russo brothers, who are directing Infinity War and the next Avengers film back-to-back] would come in after the take and go, ‘What was that you said? Say that again!’ They were really excited about it.”

Of course, as mentioned earlier, it will be the Guardians interactions with the Avengers characters we know and love that will make the film so unique. Bautista was asked if he got to riff with Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, and Bautista went on to explain that the real show may be the interaction between Star-Lord and Iron Man:

“We do. I’m excited about some of the stuff we did, but I don’t know what’s going to make it in the film. I always thought there would be a lot of good interaction between Tony Stark and Drax, and there was. And Star-Lord and Tony Stark as well. When you put those two guys in a room together, it’s like a spontaneous combustion. Talk about two talented guys who are so witty and smart and honed-in on their craft. It was a spectacle, and I’m so excited I got to witness it firsthand.”

Finally, Bautista discussed James Gunn’s, director of both Guardians of the Galaxy films, involvement in Avengers: Infinity War:

“I think one of the reasons we were so successful to begin with is because of James’s creativity. We had the luxury of him writing for us on Infinity War, and the Russos didn’t at all try to make us into something we weren’t. They encouraged us to own our characters and be the Guardians of the Galaxy, not their Guardians of the Galaxy.”

We knew Gunn had a lot of involvement in Infinity War, but I didn’t realize he was literally writing for his characters that he established in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. This is excellent insight indeed, as the Russo brothers’ films tend to be among the more serious in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the fact James Gunn wrote dialogue for them and they allowed the actors to “own” their characters can only benefit the film. Not that I don’t have complete trust in the Russos after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.

What do you think about what Bautista has to say about Infinity War? Is it any surprise that Stark and Quill would be the two who seek to out-banter one another? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
