DC Walmart ‘Giant’ Stories To Be Released In Comic Shops This July

During the DC Meet the Publishers panel at WonderCon 2019, Jim Lee and Dan Didio talked a lot about their strategy to be able to attract new readers of all ages to DC Comics. For younger readers there is the DC Zoom and DC Ink, in-between there are all the main stream books that DC offers week to week. Last but certainly not least there is their mature Black Label line. DC is also trying to reach new readers in unexpected places, like Walmart for example, where 100 page “giant” stories were released featuring Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

But as Didio pointed out in the panel, these books were somewhat hard to find for fans that wanted to add these to their collection. One person in attendance said that he drove two hours away to find a Walmart that carried the books. It is because of the demand from comic book fans who maybe don’t have access to a Walmart that DC is going to release these books in July in the direct market.

According to the press release from DC, each story arc will arrive in the form of a six-issue miniseries which will feature two chapters per issue. The first issue to arrive will be Superman: Up in the Sky #1, written by Tom King with artwork by Andy Kubert and Sandra Hope on July 3rd. Here is the synopsis for that story:
Following a home invasion that ends in murder, Superman is put on the trail of a Metropolis mystery by Batman—but can even the Man of Steel discover the truth behind these tragic deaths, or their ties to the far-off world of Rann?

The next book to be released will be Batman Universe #1 on July 10th, written by Brian Michael Bendis with artwork by Nick Derington. Here is the synopsis for this title:
Following the theft of a priceless Fabergé egg, the Riddler leads The Dark Knight on a wild hunt after its true owner: Jinny Hex, a descendant of the haunted Western hero Jonah Hex. Deathstroke, Green Arrow and some of the brightest stars in the DC Universe will join The Dark Knight on the chase to find this treasure!

The third book to debut will be Wonder Woman: Come Back to Me #1, which features the amazing original creative team from the New 52 Harley Quinn series that had a huge part in her rise to popularity, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti with artwork by Chad Hardin. Here is the synopsis for this book that will be hit stands on July 17th:
When Steve Trevor is called in for a test flight of an experimental new aircraft, he winds up lost in the Bermuda Triangle—and it’s up to Wonder Woman and Etta Candy to follow his trail to a mysterious and savage island.

The books will all feature new cover art as you can see above. Superman: Up in the Sky features cover art by Andy Kubert, Wonder Woman: Come Back to Me features cover art by Amanda Conner and Batman Universe features cover art by Nick Derington. I live in a small town in which the Walmart does not carry these books so I am happy to be able to get them this summer.
