Doctor Who: Jodie Whittaker Cast As First Female Doctor!

– by Joseph Medina

For years, fans have been asking for a female Doctor in the sci-fi series Doctor Who. After all, the Doctor is just an alien, so the actual sex that he respawns as is kind of a non-issue. Yet despite this fact, for decades, his regenerations have exclusively led to male-looking counterparts. Prior to the announcement that Peter Capaldi would take on the mantle as the 12th Doctor, many hoped that that would the one that would shepherd in a female Doctor. Obviously, that wasn’t the case, though Capaldi brought a great deal to the character, and that certainly can’t be overlooked.

However, this December’s Christmas special will make way for some great changes. For starters, longtime showrunner Steven Moffat will be stepping down and passing on the reins to Broadchurch showrunner Chris Chibnall. This would seem to be an even more perfect time to change things up and give fans the female Doctor they’ve been asking for, and it sounds like the filmmakers agree. Thanks to a new announcement from the official Doctor Who official Twitter account, we now know that they have cast their first female Doctor.

Check out the announcement below:

That’s right. Taking Capaldi’s place is Jodie Whittaker. Some viewers may recognize Whittaker from Attack the Block, but more interestingly is the fact that she played Beth in the series Broadchurch. This is notable because Chris Chibnall was the creator and showrunner in that series, and by carrying over Whittaker, he’s taking at least one familiar element from one show to another.

The casting of Whittaker also puts an end to the rampant speculation of who will be the next Doctor. For some time, the bookies were betting hard that Tilda Swinton would be making her way to the TARDIS, but obviously, that was never meant to be. Whittaker’s also beaten out other rumored actors for the role, including Ben Wishaw and Sacha Dhawan.

We can’t wait to see what she bring to the table for the Doctor this December!

What do you think? Are you excited to see Whittaker cast as the Doctor, or are you disappointed she isn’t a ginger?
