Things certainly seem to be on the rise for Donald Glover, an actor and writer who had his start in online sketch comedy before hopping into features with the Derrick Comedy features Mystery Team. Around the same time, Glover began to establish himself in the TV world as a writer/actor on 30 Rock before moving into the show that brought him his greatest mainstream recognition: Community.
Interestingly enough, Donald Glover is also notable to Spider-Man fans, as he was one of the inspirations for Miles Morales, the half black, half hispanic Marvel character who takes on the mantle of Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker. Donald Glover even got to voice the character in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man for a bit, and from there, a grassroots campaign to get Glover cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming in some form or another paid off when it was announced he would be in the film -- though as or right now, we don't quite know the role.
Speaking with Time, Glover discussed the whole process of getting cast, and how strange it was.
"The Internet is a strange box. It was weird to see that full circle. I only did it because I thought it was a cool role. I’m never going to do something just because. I’d rather take a risk, at least right now when I can still do that. It’s just weird.
"The movie was fun to shoot. I’m glad I got the opportunity. You don’t want it to feel like some sort of affirmative action. This wasn’t that at all. I know the director, he’s doing a really good job and good ideas."
But Spider-Man isn't the only big franchise that has people buzzing about Donald Glover. More recently, there have been pretty strong rumors surrounding him playing a younger Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo Star Wars spinoff film.
Glover wouldn't say much else on the matter other than: "Yep. There are rumors."
But like any American, Star Wars is a franchise that means a lot to him, and he made that point pretty clear.
"I mean, I grew up on it. My dad was a big fan. I had all the toys when I was little. I had a Darth Vader with the lightsaber he has. It was cool. It’s a dynasty. It’s like the bible. I love that franchise."
Like any good actor, Glover has remained rather tight-lipped about the whole thing. Like with the Han Solo role, Lando is incredibly iconic, so any actor taking it on is bound to fall under intense scrutiny. But despite the high bar set by Billy Dee Williams, most fans seem to be in favor of Glover playing Lando. He's got the comedic chops for sure, but can he lay on the charm? That remains to be seen for me.
