Dwayne Johnson’s Next Big Project Is About Flaming Skyscraper

Dwayne Johnson has become this generation’s action hero. Though while it’s easy to relegate him to the specific genre, he adds a real heart and soul to the movies he’s in. Not only that, he adds in some pretty amazing comedy elements as well. Just take a look at San Andreas. It’s kind of a garbage movie, but it’s so self aware that it works on a fun, primal level, and a lot of that can be credited to Johnson’s performance. And he’s not just an actor. He’s someone who collaborates in the development process of the films he ultimately stars in.

Well, Johnson has taken to Twitter to reveal one of these new projects that has apparently been in development for two long years, and if the film’s name, Skyscraper, is any indicator, it seems like it’ll be one hell of a ride.

Given that Johnson seems to have gone to great lengths to research this film, I have to wonder if they’ll be shooting for something a bit more serious in tone than his average film. But given the Towering Inferno-esque premise, it’s hard to think they’ll be putting their frowny faces on too hard. If nothing else, the research was likely done to give the film some extra color and authenticity to an otherwise over-the-top and ridiculous story.

Also of note is that the film looks to be set in China, based on the synopsis. With that in mind, it’s very clear they’re going to be banking on those foreign dollars to help them make those returns on their investment.

The film is also set to be written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who recently worked with Johnson on his action-comedy flick Central Intelligence. That one turned out to be a fun, pleasant surprise, and while this one sounds like a more traditional action-thriller, we can still see this one being something worth checking out.

The official synopsis for Skyscraper is below:

“Global icon Dwayne Johnson leads the cast of Legendary’s SKYSCRAPER as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Ford, who now assesses security for skyscrapers.  On assignment in China he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it.  A wanted man on the run, Will must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who is trapped inside the building…above the fire line.

“Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, We’re the Millers), the 3D action-thriller is produced by Beau Flynn (San Andreas, Baywatch), Johnson and Thurber.  SKYSCRAPER’s executive producers are Dany Garcia (Baywatch, Ballers) and Hiram Garcia (San Andreas, Central Intelligence).  Wendy Jacobson (San Andreas) is Co-producer.  The film will be released by Universal Pictures.”
