Early Box Office Tracking Estimating $40 Million Opening For Dunkirk

Now that Wonder Woman has been so successful for Warner Bros. Pictures this summer, Dunkirk is next in line for them to hit the big screen on July 21. The World War II film is directed by Christopher Nolan. It’s set in the early stages of the war when retreating Allied soldiers needed to be evacuated. Here is the synopsis for the film:

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

Dunkirk stars newcomers Fion Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney and Jack Lowden. Another notable name making his film debut is Harry Styles, who’s fans sell out his world tour appearances in minutes. The film could probably get a good boost just off of Style’s fans alone. Also in the film is Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.

Although the film won’t be coming out for another few weeks, thanks to Variety we have early industry tracking, not involved with Warner Bros., that are estimating the film to make $30 to $40 million dollars domestically it’s first weekend. Two other films will play a major role in Dunkirk‘s numbers, Spider-Mam: Homecoming, which will be in it’s third week and Planet of the Apes, which will be in it’s second. Depending on what kind of numbers those films are still putting up the numbers for Dunkirk could change.

The estimated $40 million would be Nolan’s lowest opening release since The Prestige, which made a low $14.8 million dollars back in 2006. He has also had quite the success with the caped crusader. The Dark Knight opened to $158.4 million and the third installment The Dark Knight Rises even beat those numbers at $160.9 million.

It will be interesting to see how this film does. I feel that a lot of World War II films are either a home run or strike out, and not much in between. Like I had mentioned, before Harry Styles’ introduction in the film, as an actor, could play a role as he has so many fans around the world. Are you looking forward to Dunkirk?
