Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Has A Clever, But Obvious Title

It’s rare that a sci-fi movie leaves as much of an impression as Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow, without being a sequel/prequel/remake or based on a comic book (it was an adaptation of a Japanese novel titled All You Need Is Kill). Written by Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation), it stared Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the former playing an unlikely soldier, who gets trapped in a time loop, repeating the same day every time he dies. Edge of Tomorrow is oneof the more memorable alien invasion movies this decade, with its Groundhog Day elements allowing for all sorts of action, horrors, and humor.

Edge of Tomorrow had a title problem. I was working at a movie theater in 2014, and most guests would ask for a ticket for “that Tom Cruise movie.” Others called it Live Die Repeat, which was actually the tagline from the poster. It was printed larger than the actual title and was far more memorable and straight-forward, so the movie sort of morphed names. The blu-ray release fed off this misconception, intentionally printing “Live Die Repeat” bigger than “Edge of Tomorrow” on the cover and spine of the case.

Collider had a chat with director Doug Liman, who offered an update on Edge of Tomorrow 2, including a new title:

“We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when.”

I guess we can officially call Edge of Tomorrow, “Live Die Repeat” now, as that makes more sense with the new title for the sequel. In these comments, Liman also confirms Emily Blunt’s involvement for the first time, and is obviously very excited about the story. All this from a man who had no interest in Edge of Tomorrow 2 until he was reportedly pitched an idea by Mr. Cruise.

What do you think of the title Live Die Repeat and Repeat? Does it remind you too much of shampoo? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
