Fantastic Beasts 2: J.K. Rowling Teases New Screenplay’s Progress

Late last year, audiences had a chance to venture back into the Wizarding World with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a film set decades prior to the events in Harry Potter. For the longest time, the producers of the film were adamant that this one would stand on its own. However, as the development of that project went on, it became clear that it would have strands of the Harry Potter DNA woven throughout.

If you’ve had a chance to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, that much is clear. There is much more than mere fan service present in the film. The events alluded to in the Harry Potter books and films are strewn about the movie, and by the time the closing credits rolled, it became very clear why Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts screenwriter J.K. Rowling had teasedthis as the start of a five-film series.

Around the release of the first film while making the promotional rounds, Rowling had mentioned that she was in the process of writing the screenplay for the second Fantastic Beasts film. Now, in a recent tweet, she seems to be teasing that she has completed the final draft of the script. Why else would she be “Having a Beastly day…”?

While critical reception was fairly solid for the Wizarding World spinoff, one did get a feeling that some fans weren’t quite as thrilled with this interpretations as the other films. Yes, it may have been set in the same world, but it felt a whole lot different. Perhaps it was the lack of a school, or less of an emphasis on character and more on plot (not to mention the fact that it was less of a wish-fulfillment tale), but there was some sort of — for the lack of a better word — magic lost in this first film.

With Fantastic Beasts 2, we’ll be heading into more familiar territory, with both Grindelwald and Dumbledore confirmed to have bigger roles. Perhaps as we near the time period closer to the original franchise, and as we start seeing more characters audiences miss, it may be just the kicker we need to see this franchise break $1 billion worldwide.

We can certainly dream.

Fantastic Beasts 2 hits theaters on November 16, 2018.
