First ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Trailer Hits The Web!

When it was first announced that there would be a spinoff series to AMC’s highly successful series “The Walking Dead,” no one really knew just what the filmmakers would do to differentiate it from its sister series. Sure, we’d follow different characters, but what else?

These are some of the questions that were answered when AMC dropped the first full-length “Fear the Walking Dead” trailer to San Diego Comic Con attendees in Hall H. And now it’s available online for all of us to enjoy!

Based on this trailer, the major difference is that it actually shows the origins of the deadly virus. This wasn’t really news–we knew that’s what it’d show–but seeing it in the trailer really helped to set it apart from “The Walking Dead.” The virus origin is something that’s been largely avoided in the series. Admittedly, part of the appeal of the original “Walking Dead” series and comic was that the conflict was less about the zombies and more about how mankind fights itself when pushed to the edge. This may also very well be the case with “Fear the Walking Dead,” but based on this trailer, it very much seems to fall in line with every other zombie property out there.

While this is a well-enough put together trailer, it’s hard not to feel a bit let down by what we see. None of it is bad, mind you, but in a world where we’ve seen this premise played out ten dozen times, I’m a bit hungry (no pun intended) for something different. The real test could be what happens when “Fear” and “The Walking Dead” cross over, and what kind of unique beast we could get out of that. For now, I’m cautiously optimistic. There are no red flags of any kinds that I’m getting, but on the whole it seems very much, “been there, done that.” But who know? This is a brand new series, and what we saw is likely just the first episode or two of the six-episode season. Plus, when it starts to trek into season two territory, who knows what kind of stuff “Fear the Walking Dead” will be into?

The series premieres on August 23, and it was also revealed that “The Walking Dead” would have a 90-minute season opener on October 11, 2015.
