Gambit: Fox Has ‘Started Over’ With The Script Thanks To The Success Of Deadpool & Logan

The Gambit movie is a project that just won’t die. I’m usually not one for cynicism — in a movie blogosphere that has more than its fair share of snarky contributors, I’m more inclined to lean on the positive side of things. After all, we all like movies don’t we? That being said, I’m not sure Gambit is a movie anyone has been asking for. Sure, Gambit is a well-loved member of the X-Men team, and as someone who grew up watching the ’90s cartoon, I also have quite the affinity for the character.

But is he someone that needed his own film? That much can be debated, and despite Channing Tatum being attached to the movie, it’s faced setback after setback. At this point, we were content to accept the fact that we wouldn’t see a Gambit film, after all. However, it sounds like the project is not yet dead.

Speaking with Hey U Guys, Tatum gave an update on the film, saying:

“We’ve basically just completely lit a fuse to the first one and blew it completely out of the water. I think we got lucky. We got hit with some setbacks — I think all for a good reason though, because we were trying to do something completely different. We were trying to do something this kind of genre movies haven’t seen before, and then we just kept running into the same problems.

And then Deadpool and Logan came through and literally just kicked the doors down, and now we’re really getting to do some of the things that we’ve always wanted to do with the script, and we just sort of started over. It’s great.”

So this is both good news and bad news. The bad news here is that I still personally don’t see a reason why we need to get a Gambit movie any time soon. He’s still a character who works better in a group dynamic. That being said, it’s promising that its current rewrite was inspired by Deadpool and Logan. The folks over at Fox now realize that they can take big risks with these characters, and by no means have to be confined by the standard PG-13 box the genre has stuck with for the better part of 15 years.

Now that’s not to say this movie needs to be a hard R — I don’t think that’s necessary (though it wouldn’t be a gad thing). But with Tatum’s comments in mind, it sounds like they’re at least willing to take bigger risks, which is always a good thing. While I may not be a fan of the idea of a Gambit movie, perhaps I’ll be a fan of whatever they come up with.
