If you thought moving Season 7 of Game of Thrones a few months was hard to stomach, then get ready, because you may be in for a big surprise.
With Season 7 fast approaching, and only 13 total episodes remaining for the series as a whole, it may feel like things are really winding down, but from a filmmaking standpoint for showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Recently, EW had a chance to speak with Casey Bloys, the programming president at HBO, and in that conversation, he discussed the impending end of the series, and when asked if it could potentially air in 2019, he said:
“Yeah. They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule. We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.”

HBO has always been great about nurturing the creative process with their shows. Rather than put the productions and a hard schedule, they’re always careful not to paint them into a corner. At the end of the day, a bad product can hurt the image they’ve so carefully crafted, and it’s especially important with Game of Thrones, which is considered to be one of their flagship series.
This is all very much in line with things they’ve said in the past. At the end of the day, it’s most important that they focus on making the remaining seasons the best that they can be. Just because they know it’ll be a hit doesn’t mean they can put the heat under the showrunners and expect gold. It’s an admirable trait, but not ones that fans may be thrilled to hear.
“One of the hallmarks of the show has been how cinematic is it. The show has proven that TV is every bit as impressive and in many cases more so, than film. What they’re doing is monumental. When you see these battles in Season 7, and what I imagine Season 8 will be, it’s a big, big show. We’ve done a lot of great shows, but this one combines the complex characters we love with a huge cinematic scope. I think this is the first show to prove that can be done — and we’re the first people to pay for it.”
Of course, there’s still a solid chance that Season 8 could air in 2018, but until they actually get a handle on the rest of the scripts, and can see how the production is set to unfold, there’s just no way for them to tell what the timeframe will be like.
What do you think? Does it worry you that we may have to wait until 2019 to see the epic six-episode conclusion of Game of Thrones? Let us know your thoughts down below!
