‘GAME OF THRONES’ Soars With Best-Ever Ratings For Season 6 Finale

If there was any concern that HBO’s GAME OF THRONES was going to miss a step now that it’s no longer directly linked to George R.R. Martin’s books- having caught up to them last season- that can firmly be put to rest now. The season finale on Sunday, which closed out the sixth run of episodes for the series, was the highest-rated episode of GAME OF THRONES ever, and it topped last year’s finale- which held that title up until now.

Deadline is reporting that the episode, titled “The Winds of Winter,” bested the Season 5 capper by 10%. Even more notable is that it topped last week’s heavily anticipated “Battle of The Bastards” by a whopping 16%. All in all, GAME OF THRONES pulled in 8.89 million viewers on Sunday night, while also breaking its own record with a 4.4 rating in the key 18-49 demo.

Based on the fact that “The Winds of Winter” was a total game-changer for the series, filled with surprises, twists, and a closing sequence that places immediate interest on Season 7, it’s safe to say that GAME OF THRONES is destined for continued greatness.

Also, it’s pretty clear that Martin is still heavily influential on the direction of the series, since “The Winds of Winter” will be the title of the next book in his saga. So it looks like the series has struck the right balance between blazing its own path, and connecting to Martin’s plans.

What’d you think of the Season 6 finale?
