Game Of Thrones: [SPOILER] Returns!

Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7, Episode 5.

Game of Thrones fans have been treated to a wonderful season thus far, lots of action and excitement, and long awaited character meetings were finally realized. Last night’s episode, “Eastwatch”, brought back a character that many fans feel was gone for far too long. That character is Gendry Baratheon. Gendry, who is one of former king Robert Baratheon’s many, many, bastards, was last seen in Season 3, Episode 10, when Ser Davos Seaworth helped him escape from Melisandre. We last see Gendry row away into the sea. For all we know he had been rowing around in the ocean all this time, and we half expected him to return with arms the size of Dwayne Johnson’s.

As it turns out, Gendry Baratheon has been hiding right under Cersei’s nose, in King’s Landing. He has been working his usual trade as a blacksmith, and is not pleased to be making weapons for the Lannisters, as Cersei would kill him if he was found. Entertainment Weekly recently spoke with Dave Hill, the writer of Sunday’s episode, “Eastwatch”, and discussed the move to bring back Gendry.

“We’ve always expected to bring Gendry back since we saw him rowing out. We almost brought him back in season 6 and it didn’t quite work out. We definitely wanted him here for the big mission, we wanted Robert Baratheon’s bastard son back into the show. It made sense that Davos would want to save this boy who’s like a surrogate son. And Joe is great which is a big positive.”

It was nice to see Gendry again, although I think most fans expected to see him sooner. Seeing how Jon Snow has more or less welcomed him aboard, there is a good chance he will reunite with Arya at some point as well, assuming he survives the trip north of the wall. Gendry has always been a solid dude, and gave us a showcase of his skills in last night’s episode as he used his giant hammer to take down the Lannister soldiers with ease. I can see Gendry being very valuable to Jon Snow’s cause, perhaps he will use his blacksmith skills to make weapon of dragonglass.
