There’s been talk of a Gears of War film almost since the time the first game hit the original Xbox back in the mid-2000s. And it makes sense. The game has a very cinematic style, and its hard-action, testosterone-fueled leads very much lends itself to the medium. Of course, like almost every other video game franchise under the sun, there have been some…delays in the development process.
For whatever reason, an actual Gears of War film has had a hard time getting off the ground. Scripts were written, scripts were rewritten, budgets were raised an scaled back, and every so often we get news of them taking another crack at the franchise. It’s all very much par for the course for most video game adaptations.
When last we heard (which was last October), the film is in development over at Universal Pictures, and that’s where the latest news picks up. According to Variety, Universal has hired scribe Shane Salerno to pen the script for Gears of War. For those unfamiliar, Salerno has written such films as Shaft, Armageddon, Savages, and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem, but he’s most notably involved in the myriad of Avatar sequels James Cameron is currently hard at work at. Given that we have no idea how those films have turned out, and his previous work has been so hit and miss, it’s hard to decide whether or not this is good or bad news.
Most writers have a pretty solid filmography to pull from, but Salerno hops in and out of TV, and often when he does write, he has large gaps of time in between work. For someone who’s been in the industry for well over 20 years, he seems to have very little to show for it, and while I can’t say that’s good or bad, it does make it pretty hard to gauge my confidence in his being hired.
All that aside, this is some positive momentum from Gears of War, and I’m interested to see what becomes of this long in-development film.
