Godzilla 2 Begins Filming, What Monsters Will The Creature Fight?

Back in 2014, Legendary released the American reboot of Godzilla. Of course, this is a character that’s been in the pop culture zeitgeist for decades, starting with the 1954 film, Godzilla, and after the botched attempt in the late ‘90s, fans hoped that this would be the one Hollywood interpretation to succeed. And succeed it did. The film was certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and it managed to rake in over $500 million at the worldwide box office, securing not only a sequel, but its place in a larger MonsterVerse.

We’ve known for some time that the sequel would be called Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and with the film hitting principal photography today, we now know why. According to a press release from Warner Bros., the film will have Godzilla going up against three other legendary monsters.

Here’s what we have as the most basic synopsis for the flick:

“The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”

The film, which begins principal photography today, is being directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Conjuring films), and Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai) and Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), both reprising their Godzilla roles; Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street, Manchester by the Sea); Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford (Get Out); Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s Silicon Valley); Charles Dance (HBO’s Game of Thrones); O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton); Aisha Hinds (Star Trek Into Darkness); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
