Just yesterday, we reported that Legendary had hired Krampus scribes Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields to write the screenplay for the upcoming sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, which was directed by Gareth Edwards. Considering Edwards would be busy in the Star Wars world for some time, it was already widely assumed that Godzilla 2 would helmed by someone else. While the move to hire two of the three writers for the comedy horror film, Krampus, seemed like an odd one, it now makes a bit more sense in light of a more recent development.
A new report from Screen Crush is now stating that Dougherty is doing much more than co-writing the film — and is actually on board to direct as well. This actually makes a whole lot of sense, since Dougherty also worked in a similar capacity as co-writer/director of Krampus, and as such, Legendary exploiting his range of talents is by no means an odd thing.
While there’s definitely very little crossover between such films as Krampus and Godzilla, I’d still argue this to be a good move on behalf of Legendary. While 2014’s Godzilla had its strengths in the horror aspect of the film, the human characters were largely boring and lifeless. Bringing in the likes of Dougherty and Shields to write the script — with Dougherty directing — could help to inject a bit more life into the sequel. And don’t think just because Krampus was part comedy that that means Dougherty has no experience in actually bringing the chills. He’s also responsible for writing and directing the cult horror film Trick ‘r Treat.
In fact, I’d say the only potential downside here is that Dougherty’s directing cache is quite short, so it’s hard to tell if his resume is strong enough to guarantee Godzilla 2 could be a win. In his favor in direct response to that concern, however, is the fact that he’s had a hand in writing such films as X-2: X-Men United and Superman Returns, both of which are solid films, in my opinion.
